What is the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)?

It is an immigration program which qualifies for Express Entry (EE). This program is for skilled foreign tradespeople whose occupations are in high demand in Canada. Predominantly for those whose occupations are eligible for this program are listed under skill type B of Canada’s National Occupational Classification (NOC) system.

Which skilled trades fall under this program?

  • Major Group 72, industrial, electrical and construction trades
  • Major Group 73, maintenance and equipment operation trades
  • Major Group 82, supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production
  • Major Group 92, processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators
  • Minor Group 632, chefs and cooks
  • Minor Group 633, butchers and bakers

What is the eligibility criteria?

  • Minimum 2 years of full-time paid work experience within past 5 years in of the trades listed
  • Also have language abilities (reading, listening, speaking, writing)
  • Have job offer of full time employment for a period of at least 1 year
  • Certificate of qualification in that skilled trade (issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial, or federal authority)

What is certificate of qualification/qualification certificate?

It is a document which proves candidate is qualified for skilled trade and they must have,

  • Passed the certification exam (designed to measure proficiency in certain knowledge, skills and abilities of a subject)
  • Meet requirements to practice trade in province or territory

Is education requirement necessary for the program?

There is no education requirement, although your rank can further improve in the EE pool if

  • Schooling is from Canada (secondary or post-secondary institution; certificate, diploma, or degree)
  • OR
  • Have foreign education (points for completed educational credential (ECA); education should be Canadian equivalent)

How is it beneficial to Canada?

The FSTP targets various industries in Canada like construction, manufacturing, hotel management, et cetera. If those sectors are unable to find skilled workers for their respective fields, the FSTP helps address the shortage. For those coming to Canada with their skills not just settle eventually, but contribute significantly to their related sectors.
